Developed by Australian
Tom Bowen, it
is a holistic technique which addresses
the body as a whole unit not just the presenting symptoms.
It embraces the physical,
chemical, emotional and mental aspects of each person receiving a treatment.
The
Bowen Technique has been described as one of the most important health
care discoveries in medicine today. Why?
Because it balances the autonomic
nervous system and detoxifies the body, it has been highly effective for
muscular,
skeletal or nerve imbalance; injury or chronic conditions; Fibromyalgia -
plus a
host of other common maladies and conditions including:
Headaches; Migraines; TMJ; Neck pain; Frozen shoulder; Tennis elbow;
Carpal tunnel; Scoliosis; Back pain; Chest pain; Pelvic imbalance; Hip pain;
Sciatica; Coccyx problems; Hamstring injury; Leg cramps; Knee conditions;
Ankle pain or sprains; Digestive disorders; Respiratory conditions;
General and emotional wellness; Stress-management …
to name but a few!
The therapy induces a deep feeling of relaxation and is so gentle it can be
used from
infancy to the elderly. Got a sleepless baby?
Try Bowen! More recently it has even
been demonstrated to be useful on animals.
A typical Bowen treatment consists of a
certified practitioner making a series of
moves across muscles and tendons using gentle pressure, disturbing the
muscle
and creating energy surges. Because the human body is so
amazing, self-healing
can often be achieved with minimal outside influence.
It works on a physiological level by
touching sense receptors under the skin and
alerting the brain to any problem areas that the body has.
There is no manipulation
of hard tissue, but the Bowen Technique encourages the body to re-align
itself.
It has been called “physical homeopathy”.
A
treatment will take anything from 30-45 minutes. The
technique is remarkably
simple and the motto of all Bowen therapists is “Less is More”.
A feature of the technique is a series of
breaks during which the patient is not
touched, which gives the ‘body-brain connection’ time to respond to the
information gradually,
and respond accordingly.
The good news is ….. The Bowen Technique is
now available here in Central Florida!
Actually, it’s based in Winter Park
operating out of
East Wind Therapies 1954 Howell Branch Rd, Suite 112, Winter Park, Fl 32792.
Cheryll Hillier (321-277 8847)
Formerly in television production and a
Massage therapist since l993, discovered the Technique in l995
when, despite trying every conceivable traditional and alternative
treatment, her own debilitating neck
and arm injuries were remarkably improved following just two Bowen
treatments.
As she says, “Bowen gave me my arm and my
life back!”
Six medication-free months later, after
much researching (plus testing of several
different Bowen practitioners!), and so inspired by the results, she decided
to take
the training herself, and has since taken several advanced seminars.
So passionately does she believe in the
Bowen Technique, she has completely given
up regular massage therapy work, and has devoted herself to the long-term
development
of Bowen therapy, and is also actively involved in the research and training
aspect of
events, collaborating with Jo Anne Whitaker, MD., a highly respected and
internationally acclaimed
research and teaching physician, author of over sixty scholarly publications
and recipient
of numerous awards, specializing in hematology, oncology, nutrition and
psychiatry.
Her aim is to spread the word so that
everybody can have access to the treatment,
and if her client referrals are anything to go by, the Bowen family is
growing rapidly!
“This is not a job - this is my labor of
love!”
According to Cheryll, Bowen therapy treats
the person, not the condition.
The work is merely offered to the body, not
forced – and the body either accepts or
declines in much the same way as a plate of food is offered to a child.
Take it or leave it!
The Bowen practitioner is merely a
catalyst, setting the stimulus in motion for the body
to heal itself. Quite often improvement is noticed in
other areas which the practitioner
may not have been told about.
Many conditions can be relieved in as few
as 3 sessions at weekly intervals, but some
may require long-term treatment as each patient’s body responds in it’s own
time.
Some people use the Bowen Technique as a
form of stress management and health maintenance,
seeing their therapist regularly 3-4 times each year.
Sports enthusiasts listen up!
Olympians and other sports professionals
from around the world have been treated
with The Bowen Technique.
Tests have shown that these athletes have
consistently higher performance output and
an accelerated injury recovery time.
Clients regularly report that their bodies
feel stronger and more grounded following a treatment.
Others report not having to wear
knee-braces for the first time in several years when
ski-ing after receiving Bowen therapy; lifting heavier weights than usual;
taking
seconds off their previous-best running times – the list goes on!!
Doctors, osteopaths, chiropractors physical
and sports therapists report startling successes when
Bowen therapy is integrated into their patient’s treatment plan.
Bowen Therapy is compatible with most
Orthodox and other Complementary Medicine.
However, in order to receive maximum
benefit it is recommended that other
physical therapies (Massage, physical therapy, reflexology, etc.) are not
mixed
with the Bowen Technique without a break period of 7-10 days in between.
